Frequently Asked Questions
What causes depression?
Depression is a complex condition with no single cause. It is believed to result from a combination of genetic, biological, environmental, and psychological factors. Brain chemistry, specifically imbalances in neurotransmitters, plays a significant role. Trauma, severe stress, loss, and certain medical conditions can also trigger depression.
How do I know if I have depression or if I'm just sad?
While sadness is a normal human emotion usually triggered by a difficult event and passes with time, depression is a persistent condition that interferes with daily life. If your feelings of sadness, emptiness, or loss of interest last for more than two weeks and are accompanied by physical symptoms like changes in sleep, appetite, or energy levels, you may be experiencing clinical depression.
Is depression hereditary?
Genetics can play a role in depression. If you have a family history of depression, you may be at a higher risk of developing the condition yourself. However, many people with depression have no family history of the illness, and many with a family history never develop depression.
Can depression be cured?
While there is no definitive 'cure' for depression in the traditional sense, it is highly treatable. With the right combination of therapies—such as medication, psychotherapy, and/or TMS Therapy—most people can achieve full remission of their symptoms and lead healthy, fulfilling lives.
What is Treatment-Resistant Depression (TRD)?
Treatment-Resistant Depression is a term used when a patient's depression does not respond adequately to at least two different antidepressant medications of adequate dose and duration. For individuals with TRD, alternative treatments like NeuroStar TMS Therapy are often recommended.
